Emilyâs jaw dropped when she saw Billy walking toward her. They had agreed to meet in the lobby before leaving for the fairground where the dinner and glow were being held.
âBilly, where did you get those boots?â
âTheyâre great, arenât they?â He stuck one foot out, turning it back and forth on a heel giving her the best view possible of his rust brown-imitation-crocodile-skin boots.
She could do little more than grin. âYes, great is the word.â
âI call these my âwomen gettersâ.â
Emily tsked. âI see.â She searched the lobby. âWhereâs Reid? We need to get going.â
âThatâs him right out there.â Billy pointed out the glass entry doors.
Emily looked the direction he indicated but only saw a man with his back to them, his butt covered by tight jeans with a black felt cowboy hat on his head. He stood talking to someone. With a question on her lips, the man turned. Her mouth dropped open. Reid. He looked sexier than ever. She stared, unable to do anything else. There was something about a man in a cowboy hat, especially this man.
Reid turned back to the person he had been speaking to before he pulled the door of the lobby open. He strolled to her and Billy.
âLike my hat?â He touched a couple of fingers to the brim.
Emily mentally scolded herself to close her mouth when it registered she still gaped at him. Straightening her back and clearing her throat, she tried to make herself sound unaffected by his appearance. âYes, it looks nice on you.â
Reid grinned, tipping the hat further forward. âWellll, thank you maâam,â he said in a western drawl. âYou look mighty fetching yourself.â
Warmth touched her cheeks. âThank you.â Emily had tried to dress as western as her wardrobe would allow. She had on a peasant blouse that was thin and cool, with small flowers running around the short, puffed sleeves. Tucking it into her best jeans, she added a silver chain belt. She had tamed her unruly hair by French braiding it, admitting for only a second that sheâd gone to extra pains for Reid. âI think we had better go.â
Billy moved ahead of them. Reid leaned close. âYou like me in my hat. I shouldâve bought boots then youâd really be drooling all over me.â
Before she could say anything, Reid strolled ahead and held the door for her. Emily didnât meet his gaze as she passed him, afraid heâd see he had been right.
The fairground parking lot was already half-filled with cars when they arrived. Emily anticipated it would be full and overflowing by the time the glow began. Next to the lot in a wide grassy area the Bar-B-Q dinner would be served under a large green tent. Just outside of it she could see the pit where the huge steer turned as it roasted. Sheâd never been to an event like this but had always wanted to attend when sheâd seen pictures.
Billy strolled a little ahead of her and Reid after muttering something about starving. Emily chuckled as she watched him go.
